Just Ask Anyone

Adam has been here three months and still doesn't know who to ask. Today he needs to find out exactly one thing.

Adam comes up to Kevin's desk with a laptop: “Kevin, who grants production access?” Kevin, not looking up: “Greg. But through Ivan.” Adam: “And who is Ivan?”
Greg types in headphones without turning around. Adam: “Greg, I need production access. Kevin said you grant it.” Greg: “Kevin was wrong.” Adam: “So who does?”
Corridor. Lena points at her laptop screen: “Access goes through a request. It's in the policy.” Adam: “Where's the policy?” Lena: “Knowledge base. Under Misc.”
Adam stares at a monitor where a folder tree keeps nesting deeper: “Misc to Misc 2 to Old misc...”
Ross appears from the side: “Heard you need access? Let's take it to grooming.” Adam: “When is grooming?” Ross: “Thursdays. Every other week.”
Marina's office. Adam: “Is it written down somewhere who owns what?” Marina: “Of course. The org chart.” Adam: “And where is it?” Marina's eyes slide away.
Marina turns a monitor showing a chart of plain boxes: “Here. Updated in March.” Adam: “It's September.” Marina: “So it's current.”
One box on the chart is crossed out. Adam points at it: “What about this person?” Marina: “Left. In April.” Adam: “Did he have access?”
Adam returns to Kevin's desk, shoulders slumped. Kevin: “Any luck?” Adam: “Six people. Six different answers.” Kevin: “That's normal.”
Nancy walks past with a box of papers: “You want Ivan. He's in after three today.” Adam: “How did you...” Nancy: “You've been asking out loud all morning.”
Ivan stares at his monitor, waving a hand vaguely. Adam: “Ivan, I need production access.” Ivan: “Sure, no problem. Remind me next week.”
Evening office, everyone working. Adam sits alone at his desk in front of a blank document: “I'll write it down while I remember.”
In a week Adam will start answering "just ask anyone" too.
